Australia Post boosts funding to save bush GPOs

After much debate and outcries from general post offices around the country, Ahmed Fahour has today committed an additional $51.4million over four years to small independent post offices.

This comes after last week’s news that Fahour and other executives would fargo bonuses that totalling about $3.5million.

The scheme will lift the minimum payments made to small independent post offices and post office integration into shops such as newsletters. This is great news for small communities who rely post office services in rural and remote areas.

“We have committed to maintaining our 4000-plus post offices as well as our nationwide last-mile delivery network,” Mr Fahour said.

The extra payments earmarked for post offices will take effect from July 1, but Mr Fahour said future payments hinged on Parliament supporting the proposed postal reforms. A parliamentary vote is expected by September.
